Virginia Military Institute is a historic, state-supported undergraduate college that sits on over 200 acres in the Shenandoah Valley within the Lexington, Virginia city limits. 


Co-ed Undergraduate

VMI enrolls approximately 1,717 men and women annually. About 60% of cadets are from Virginia while the rest provide representation from almost every state and several countries.

Cadet Life

24/7 Military Lifestyle

Cadets live together in barracks, eat together in Crozet Hall, and wear the historic cadet uniforms. Cadets’ daily lives and conduct are regulated by the traditions and rules of the Institute and the Honor Code.


Choice of Branch

All cadets are required to participate in one of the four (Army, Marines, Navy or Air Force) ROTC programs. Commissioning is optional; about 50% of each graduating class pursues commissions.


NCAA Div 1

VMI is a NCAA Div I school fielding 18 men's and women's teams. VMI encourages participation in club and intramural athletics supporting the concept of every cadet an athlete and every athlete a cadet.
